I looked into his eyes, curiosity blooming. “Why did you kiss me?”
“I wanted to,” he admitted, “but I also knew it would help you out of the compulsion.”
“Did you really like my blood?” I wondered, watching his face.
“Truth?” He paused. “I loved it.”
“Why?” I asked, drawing up my knees and resting my chin on them.
“It’s delicious.”
“Because you’re a vampire?”
He nodded. “Maybe.” A smirk plastered across his handsome face.
“I thought vampires were supposed to be cold and sparkle. You aren’t cold at all,” I observed.
He shook his head. He seemed to really, really hate that comparison. “I don’t sparkle either.”
I giggled. “Yeah.”
Despite his aggravation he smiled. It was adorable.
“How old are you Andre?”
He laughed. Was I asking too many questions? I was. I could not seem to help it.
I blushed. “Too much too soon?”
“Perhaps. There are more important things to discuss.” Coughing, he hid a laugh at my expression.
He was right. I sighed. “You want to know why someone is trying to kill me.”
He nodded. “Yes. Will you tell me what happened?”
I looked away from his eyes. Telling this story was going to be difficult.
“I was witness to a murder,” I tried to swallow passed the lump in my throat but I could not.
“Whose murder?” He asked, watching my face.
“My mother’s.” I whispered.
Shocked, he sat back against the couch. “I’m sorry Mare.” He reached for my hand and held it. “Truly.”
I squeezed his hand. “She was caught in the crossfire of some gang violence thing. I still don’t know the specifics.”
“When did it happen?”
“About six months ago,” I answered. The pain felt like yesterday. Still raw. Still harsh.
“Who was it?” He demanded, an edge to his voice.
“The last name is Boraggio I think.”
He sat straight up. “Are you sure? Mare, I need you to be sure.”
“Yes, Italian name. They have connections. Mafia maybe.”
He stood and began to pace the room. “Why are they coming after you?”
“I had to testify, at the trial. I positively identified the shooters. I was inside the store when it happened and I saw the men who came after her,” I explained.
Andre sat beside me quickly. Taking my hand, he looked into my eyes.
“They will not stop trying to kill you.”
“Why? I wasn’t trying to hurt anyone. They killed my mother!” I screeched.
“Shhh, it will be alright. I’m going to help you,” he promised.
“How?” I demanded. “You’ll only find trouble staying here with me.”
“I have connections Mare. Please don’t worry.” He tried to reassure me but I saw his frown.
I stood and walked into my room, quickly running for the closet. I pulled out my suitcase and threw it on the bed.
“What are you doing?”
I ignored him and began to toss clothes into the suitcase. This was ridiculous. No place in this city was safe for me now.
“Where are you going?” He asked again, agitated.
“I’m going to leave here and never come back.”
I saw panic cross his features briefly before he grabbed the suitcase and tossed it on the floor. “You are not going anywhere.” He stood in front of me and dared me to move.
“Excuse me? You don’t own me,” I yelled at him.
Fire flashed in his amber colored eyes. They flickered between honey and red and back again.
“You will do as I say,” he ordered.
“Like hell I will,” I yelled back.
I saw indecision on his face. No one had told him no before. I knew it the moment I saw his reaction. Pompous prideful arrogant man.
“I saved your life twice,” he reminded me, glaring down into my eyes.
“And I said thank you. I never asked you to intervene,” I told him through clenched teeth.
“You would have died,” he replied, agony flitting across his face.
“You could have let me. I’m nobody to you!” I raised my hand to smack his smirking face.
“I could never let that happen.” His voice held barely controlled anger.
He caught my hand and pulled me hard against him. “I’m not going to lose you, not now.”
Some of my anger died down. “Why?”
“Because I just found you,” he admitted, searching my eyes. “I won’t lose you now.”
