I looked into his eyes, curiosity blooming. “Why did you kiss me?”

“I wanted to,” he admitted, “but I also knew it would help you out of the compulsion.”

“Did you really like my blood?” I wondered, watching his face.

“Truth?” He paused. “I loved it.”

“Why?” I asked, drawing up my knees and resting my chin on them.

“It’s delicious.”

“Because you’re a vampire?”

He nodded. “Maybe.” A smirk plastered across his handsome face.

“I thought vampires were supposed to be cold and sparkle. You aren’t cold at all,” I observed.

He shook his head. He seemed to really, really hate that comparison. “I don’t sparkle either.”

I giggled. “Yeah.”

Despite his aggravation he smiled. It was adorable.

“How old are you Andre?”

He laughed. Was I asking too many questions? I was. I could not seem to help it.

I blushed. “Too much too soon?”

“Perhaps. There are more important things to discuss.” Coughing, he hid a laugh at my expression.

He was right. I sighed. “You want to know why someone is trying to kill me.”

He nodded. “Yes. Will you tell me what happened?”

I looked away from his eyes. Telling this story was going to be difficult.

“I was witness to a murder,” I tried to swallow passed the lump in my throat but I could not.

“Whose murder?” He asked, watching my face.

“My mother’s.” I whispered.

Shocked, he sat back against the couch. “I’m sorry Mare.” He reached for my hand and held it. “Truly.”

I squeezed his hand. “She was caught in the crossfire of some gang violence thing. I still don’t know the specifics.”

“When did it happen?”

“About six months ago,” I answered. The pain felt like yesterday. Still raw. Still harsh.

“Who was it?” He demanded, an edge to his voice.

“The last name is Boraggio I think.”

He sat straight up. “Are you sure? Mare, I need you to be sure.”

“Yes, Italian name. They have connections. Mafia maybe.”

He stood and began to pace the room. “Why are they coming after you?”

“I had to testify, at the trial. I positively identified the shooters. I was inside the store when it happened and I saw the men who came after her,” I explained.

Andre sat beside me quickly. Taking my hand, he looked into my eyes.

“They will not stop trying to kill you.”

“Why? I wasn’t trying to hurt anyone. They killed my mother!” I screeched.

“Shhh, it will be alright. I’m going to help you,” he promised.

“How?” I demanded. “You’ll only find trouble staying here with me.”

“I have connections Mare. Please don’t worry.” He tried to reassure me but I saw his frown.

I stood and walked into my room, quickly running for the closet. I pulled out my suitcase and threw it on the bed.

“What are you doing?”

I ignored him and began to toss clothes into the suitcase. This was ridiculous. No place in this city was safe for me now.

“Where are you going?” He asked again, agitated.

“I’m going to leave here and never come back.”

I saw panic cross his features briefly before he grabbed the suitcase and tossed it on the floor. “You are not going anywhere.” He stood in front of me and dared me to move.

“Excuse me? You don’t own me,” I yelled at him.

Fire flashed in his amber colored eyes. They flickered between honey and red and back again.

“You will do as I say,” he ordered.

“Like hell I will,” I yelled back.

I saw indecision on his face. No one had told him no before. I knew it the moment I saw his reaction. Pompous prideful arrogant man.

“I saved your life twice,” he reminded me, glaring down into my eyes.

“And I said thank you. I never asked you to intervene,” I told him through clenched teeth.

“You would have died,” he replied, agony flitting across his face.

“You could have let me. I’m nobody to you!” I raised my hand to smack his smirking face.

“I could never let that happen.” His voice held barely controlled anger.

He caught my hand and pulled me hard against him. “I’m not going to lose you, not now.”

Some of my anger died down. “Why?”

“Because I just found you,” he admitted, searching my eyes. “I won’t lose you now.”

“And you want that? You want to experience death?”

“I don’t know, Doctor. But when the rope tightened around my neck the pleasure grew. And also the sensation that I’d leave my body at any moment in a cloud of pleasure. I felt all my problems would go away. I felt deep peace.”

excerpt

Shouts from below rang out. The sound of metal clanging against metal. Too late. Her warning came too late; a loud lament tore from her throat.

“Please, Your Majesty —you must act now!” The guilty fever swelled, and hot, burning sweat flowed beneath her habit.

The queen looked at her, growing fire struggling against the exhaustion in her eyes. “How do you know?”

“Forgive me, but I helped plan the coup.”

The prince consort did not hesitate. He took the infant from the midwife then placed her back in Taliesin’s arms. Taliesin the false prophet. The blasphemer. The heretic. “Protect her,” the prince consort said.

“I swear,” Taliesin said. “With my life, my heart, and my whole soul.”

The prince consort unsheathed his sword and ran from the room, followed by a handful of guards. He did not know the force that awaited him, had no idea of the trap the queen’s sister had laid.

More shouts escaped from down below. More clanging—then a scream.

The queen looked at the high priestess with an anger approaching hate. “I do not know what you have done, and there is no time to find out. Is my child in danger?”

Tears rolled from the high priestess’s eyes. “Yes. She was to be killed.” Her throat squeezed shut. “By my hand.”

The queen shook in rage. As she stared at the high priestess, all her maternal softness had faded. Even in her weakened state, she projected the fearsome power of Mother Earth. The queen’s fingers jerked through the air. Particles of metal appeared, swarming the high priestess like flies in the summer. She screamed as the flecks of metal spun around her, faster and faster. The delicate, royal fingers squeezed into a fist, and the metal followed, melding into twisting spirals of iron that encircled the high priestess in a curving cage that pushed sharp spikes up just under her chin.

The metal twisted tighter, pressing in to her flesh, squeezing the breath from her body. “Murder. Infanticide. Regicide. Treason,” the queen whispered. “You have committed enough crimes to die five or six deaths.”

A terrible scream came from the courtyard—the scream of someone who had been stabbed, but not yet killed. The kind of scream that meant blood and suffering.

The flames of conscience roared even hotter now. The high priestess knew those sounds all too well. She had been responsible for too many cries over the past year. With the pressure of the metal outside her body, and the fire inside her soul, the high priestess thought she might die.

“Your Majesty?” Taliesin stepped forward, holding the baby to his chest. “The high priestess did not go through with the crime. Indeed, she gave warning at great personal risk.” His eyes met hers now. Piercing, bright as quicksilver, they seemed to flow through her in a way that opened her soul to him, leaving it bare and uncovered. She had the certain knowledge that he was reading her heart as easily as she might read a book. “I see great darkness ahead. Great difficulty.” He winced, as if what he saw caused great pain. Then he continued, “It may be that only she can save the princess.”

I ran to the concession counter to see Frank had abandoned his post. Without an employee in sight, and a movie guy refusing to push pause, I took my only option. I climbed over the counter to get my own damn butter.

As I was falling off the other side of the counter—after a shameful ass-in-the-air presentation—it was evidently clear Harlan was right. I might have been one hell of a dancer, and had a rare audition with Tender West’s summer dance program, but I truly was a complete klutz.

After pulling myself off a filthy floor, I wiped questionable grease off my palms and mailbag and grabbed my bucket of popcorn—and yes, I refilled it, deciding I was a regular and deserved a couple of free kernels. Feeling giddy at finally having control over the infamous butter machine, I swore angels sung in harmony, and I smiled and squealed in delight.

When I heard a chuckle behind me, my nervous stealing hands threw my bucket of popcorn up into the air, announcing my guilt. I turned to see who had busted me and looked into the most mysterious, trouble-promising, male blue eyes in the whole wide world.

The rough-looking character with darker hair and a medium-sized scar above his left eyebrow stood on the ‘proper’ side of the counter, where I should have been, and watched popcorn fall from my unruly red hair. “Damn, sorry to have scared you. I just need a water. How much will it be?”

Fighting the desire to lick the individual before me, I uttered, “Uh,” before looking up at the price menu on the wall behind me. “Ummm a dollar seventy-five… Damn! They charge a buck seventy-five for a water? That is redunkulous!”

As tatted fingers reached into a leather wallet, Mr. Lickable said, “You have unusual sale tactics.”

Being a tad bit stunned by this guy, who pleasantly appeared to be everything mamas warn young girls about, I was slow to realize he thought I was a theater employee. Since my mother never took the time to warn me about such things, and turning down an opportunity for a good time was against my religion, I agreed. “That’s what the owner said in my job interview. Yep! That’s me: Franket.”

Tilting his head and exposing a partially tattooed neck, he asked, “Your name is Franket?” The tattoo saying, “Life 1982” was clearly significant, but it being along his jugular seemed even more so.

I shrugged. “I know. My parents must hate me, right?”

He grinned, and I was instantly intrigued, especially when the stranger said, “Far too cute to be a Franket, but I think you can more than pull off a Franky. Do you mind?”

This stranger danger could’ve decided to rename me ‘Mug Rat El Stinky,’ and I would’ve still replied, “Works for me! My mom may not like it, but she needs to pipe it down anyway, or I’m telling my dad she’s sleeping with the pool boy.”

“You have a pool boy, yet you work here?”

“Not my pool boy, remember? Mother’s pool toy—I mean boy.”

“You’re a natural born hell-raiser, ain’t cha?”

I approved of his approving tone. Then I thought of what my Link had said earlier. “Born ready.” I reached into the fridge for the water bottle and set it on the counter. “That’ll be one seventy-five.”

“No tax?”

“Huh?”

Mr. Lickable snickered. “There’s more of that talent you must’ve been hired for.”

“Like you said, Mr. Water Purchaser, I’m cute. Probably how I got the job, right?”

“I’d hire you.” Somehow, I understood he was implying more, but I played along.

“You have a movie theater?”

“Nope.”

“Sorry. Seems you and I are over before we ever even began.”

“Oh, something has begun here, and you and I both know it.”

Boy, did I! I gripped the counter so I wouldn’t humiliate myself by throwing my willing body right back over the counter where I had come from, offering myself on a popcorn platter. Ah, but playing hard to get was so much more fun, so I had to do it. “Sorry, on the clock. And I have three mouths to feed, so I’ve gotta keep earning my pathetic excuse for a paycheck.”

He playfully shook his head. “How old are you? Mouths to feed?”

“Yeppers. My adopted boys. Reether, Harlan, and Ford. And I’m seventeen. Jailbait for you, I presume?”

“I’d take my chances with jail time, but I’m not ready for kids, Franky.”

“Too late. I’m a package deal.”

He put down a five on the counter. “Damn. Well, at least keep the change—for your boys.”

“Had every intention to.” I watched the bad boy in the making slip from my incapable grasp. His black T-shirt was snug, taunting me to take a gander at shoulders that were surely strong and perfectly molded, but I got preoccupied with his snug jeans that ever-so-gently caressed the cutest ass known to man. I whispered to myself, “Here’s to one-sided mental affairs.”

I gasped when I saw another tattoo on the back of his neck, along his spinal cord. It read, “Death 1995.” We were in 2013.

The band was rocking it at The Pinnacle when I heard, “Wanna dance?”

I glanced up, and then up a little more. He was tall, with nice shoulders, and a nice smile.

“Sure.” I stood, watching his face as I rose to my full six feet two inches, plus the heels I was wearing. A lot of men want women shorter than they are. My eyes passed his, and then his followed mine up. I figured if I had been barefoot, we would’ve been about the same height. His smile didn’t falter, and he reached for my hand. Okay! I smiled back.

We sized each other up as we danced. I liked what I saw. Broad shoulders, broad chest, muscular arms. Buzz haircut. A hint of tattoo peeking out from his sleeves and collar. Gold hoop in one ear.

We danced to a couple more songs, then he bought me a drink.

“I’m Ron,” he said as he handed me a glass with something orangish in it.

“Libby.”

“You’re hot.”

“Thanks.” I motioned toward the stage. “I’m going home with her tonight.”

He puckered his lips, then took a drink. “You always swing that way?”

“I swing all sorts of ways. Mostly I don’t swing at all. I’m kinda picky and I don’t get in a hurry.”

To my surprise, he smiled. “Nothing wrong with that.” He toasted me with his glass, then took another drink. “You come here a lot?”

“Fairly regular.”

“I’ll see ya again, then,” Ron said and wandered off into the crowd. A couple of minutes later I saw him dancing with another woman. Good to know I didn’t permanently crush his heart.

The orange thing tasted terrible, so I took it over to the bar and shoved it at Paul. “Give me a shot of whiskey. I need something to wash the taste of that out of my mouth.”

Paul laughed. “I tried to tell him you wouldn’t like it.” He poured me a shot. “My treat,” he said, leaning forward to hand me the drink. “See that guy down at the end of the bar? He asked if Elizabeth Nelson is here tonight.”

I craned my neck to see the man Paul was talking about. He looked like a corporate type, dressed in a business suit. Even my mother didn’t call me Elizabeth, but it was the name on my business card. “What did you tell him?”

“That I hadn’t seen you yet. Says his name is Sayd Agha.”

“Any hint as to what he wants?”

Paul shook his head.

I walked down the bar. “Mr. Agha? I’m Elizabeth Nelson. I understand you were asking for me.”

He slid off the bar stool and stood. “Ah, Miss Nelson. Yes, I would like to discuss some business with you.” He had to crane his neck up to talk to me and it seemed to bother him.

I handed him my business card. “Normally, people either send me an email or vmail. We can discuss your business tomorrow.” Rather than walk away, I hesitated, waiting to see what he would do. Expecting me at The Pinnacle was a curious choice since I had no official connection to the place. The idea that he had followed me there seeped through my alcohol-soaked brain.

“I hoped we might talk tonight,” he said, reaching out and taking my elbow. “Perhaps we could just go outside where it’s quieter.” I tried to shake him off, and he tightened his grip. “I think we need to talk now, Miss Nelson.”

“Perhaps we could go into the women’s washroom so I can torture you until you tell me what this is about,” I suggested. I stared in his eyes, but he wasn’t sufficiently shocked at what I’d said. A man who nonchalantly considered torture a standard topic of conversation? Not good.

“Look down,” I said. He glanced down at the knife I held against his abdomen. “Let go of me.” He did. “Very good. Now, turn around and face the bar. And if you think you might be faster than I am, consider if you’d bet your life on it.”

Agha made a good decision and turned around. I took a small electroshock box from my purse, put it against the back of his neck and gave him three million volts. His shaking-dance reaction attracted Paul’s attention, and he rushed around the end of the bar to catch my victim before he fell.

“Do you have a room where we can take him?” I asked. “Or do I have to drag him all the way to the basement?”

“Are you going to kill him?” Paul asked. Did I mention that Paul had known me for a very long time?

“Not until I find out how many friends he has outside. I have no idea what’s going on.”

Paul turned away and told another bartender to cover for him. He spoke into a mic clipped to his collar, then turned back to me.

“I called for a couple of bouncers to help us.”

We both scanned the room, trying to see if anyone was taking an interest in our activities. It didn’t appear anyone was paying attention. I pulled out my phone and called my dad.

“Hey, does the name Sayd Agha ring a bell?” I asked when Dad answered.

“Can’t say that it does. Why?”

“He just tried to lure me outside a club to talk business. I told him to call the office tomorrow, and he tried to get insistent.”

“Don’t go with him!”

I chuckled. “I didn’t. I can’t figure out why he’s interested in me, so I thought maybe you’d run over his pet frog or something.”

“Send me his picture.”

Two bouncers, Tom and Ramon, showed up and carried Agha down the stairs to the basement. I thought we were going to Paul’s apartment, but they surprised me. We ended up in a laundry room. Paul brought a chair, and one of the bouncers produced a rope. They were very efficient in tying my new friend to the chair.

“Looks like you boys have done this before,” I commented.

Tom winked at me.

“If he followed me here, his friends may know Nellie is a friend of mine,” I said.

Ramon’s grin turned into a scowl. “Anyone touch Nellie has a death wish.” I didn’t think he was speaking metaphorically. He nodded to Tom, who headed toward the stairs.

“Do you need me?” Paul asked. When I shook my head, he also left, but Ramon stayed.

“You here to protect me or him?” I asked.

“I don’t know him, and he ain’t near as pretty as you are. You’re Paul’s friend.” He stepped back and leaned against a washing machine.

My phone rang. “Dad?”

“His name is Adnan Erdowan,” Dad said. “He’s Turkish, but he’s been living here for about ten years. He works for a Russian electronics corporation.”

“That’s nice. By here, do you mean Toronto or North America?”

“North America. He’s based in Dallas, but airline records show he’s been shuttling back and forth from Dallas to Toronto monthly for the past year.”

“Any idea why he’s after me?”

“None. I’ve never dealt with that company, one way or the other.” Then he gave me his version of fatherly advice. “Libby, don’t take any chances and don’t leave any witnesses.”

I hung up and told the bouncer, “Maybe you should take a look outside and see if anyone’s waiting for him.”

“Already have people doing that.”

“Oh. Are you squeamish?”

“Not particularly.”

I shoved the little box into the Turk’s groin and triggered it. He screamed—long, loud, and raw. The bouncer paled. I decided he lied when he said he wasn’t squeamish. Men are like that—always trying to put on a strong front.

Chasing Casey Release Day Blitz with Jane Anthony

Title: Chasing Casey

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Cover Designer: Marisa Shor at Cover Me Darling

Hosted by: Lady Amber’s PR

~AJ~

Casey Grainger is not only the epitome of the girl next door, she’s the girl of my dreams. The blonde bombshell of a bartender who watches me with sky blue eyes, smiles with the sweetest dimples, and whose laughter is as melodic as chimes.

She stole my heart the way sunlight sneaks up on the day. Then a death in her family took her away from me. Now my heart lives in Texas while my body rots in New Jersey. As if that’s not bad enough, the ranch hand on her family’s farm is her damned ex-fiancé.

Austin still loves her, and he’s made it known. So Casey has a choice to make. It’s either him or me, but I’m far too stubborn to give up the fight.

That’s the one upside to having nothing left — I have nothing left to lose.

~Casey~

I don’t date musicians — I don’t date period — yet I find myself drawn to the dark and broody sound tech, whose wailing drum beats thump in time with the cadence of my heart. Beneath the arrogant grin and cocky one-liners, AJ Morello is a lonely man, burdened by the choices he’s made. But, he’s not the only one with regrets.

Mine goes by the name of Austin Krehley.

After seven years away, there’s still a connection. A tiny spark that slowly builds to a burning flame the longer I stay.

Two completely different men both hold two completely different pieces of my heart, but I can’t have them both.

A sexy country boy and a sultry rocker — how’s a girl to choose?

Jane Anthony is a romance author, fist pumping Jersey-girl, and hard rock enthusiast. She resides in the ‘burbs of New Jersey with her husband and children.  A lover of Halloween, vintage cars, & coffee, she’s also a cornucopia of useless 80’s knowledge and trivia. When not writing, she’s an avid reader, concert goer, and party planner extraordinaire.

Jane loves hearing from her readers! Connect with her on these social media sites, and don’t be too shy to say hello!

Blood Bound.jpg

Blurb:

Blood Bound is the Amazon bestselling Scottish urban fantasy novel that combines a breakneck plotline with flawed characters and a wicked sense of humour. “It’s a read that grips you from the beginning, and keeps you enthralled until the very end.” – Ashley, Fae Books

19-year-old twin demon trackers Shaun and Sarah Gallows are used to running into trouble—mostly the kind with fangs—but while Sarah embraces her powers to their fullest extent, trusting her instincts implicitly, Shaun distances himself from his abilities and can do little more than despair at his sister’s reckless nature and idly back her up.

When they come across 17-year-old Melissa Carling, a demon tracker who’s been torturing innocent super-naturals, they know they have to stop her. Sarah is desperate to punish Melissa for what she’s been doing but Shaun’s instant attraction to the girl points to a soul-mate bond stronger than anything he’s ever had to fight before…

The Prophecy of Arcadia.jpg

Blurb:

Being a teenager is tough, especially when you have to pretend to be something you’re not, and you’re in love with someone you shouldn’t. 115 years ago, a small planet called Arcadia was invaded by a vicious alien race and nearly destroyed. Cut off from their resources, the Arcadians turned to Earth for help. A group of Arcadian explorers discovered a Prophecy that claimed their salvation lay in the hands of two children from Earth. To ensure their safety, the Arcadian Council sent their most gifted youngsters to Earth to act as protectors. Samantha is one of them.

To succeed in her mission she must learn to control her Arcadian powers and keep her true identity from her best friend, and the girl she swore to protect, Alexia. But Samantha will soon realize that nothing is as it seems. Someone is trying to prevent the Prophecy from taking place and the prophecy boy hasn’t been found yet. There is also a new drug circulating at school that is turning students into freakishly strong menaces.

To make matters worse, distractions keep getting in her way. Such as her love/hate relationship with her “cousin” Matthew. Or her confused feelings toward popular and mysterious Julian. She wants nothing more than to be free to live her life. But the survival of Arcadia depends on her and her friends. Free will is not an option.

petrified-city

Blurb:

Welcome to Petrified City, where the dead don’t stay in the ground. Ten years ago, an accident at the city chemical plant leaked toxins into the soil of the historic Brookwood Hill Cemetery. From the poisoned ground emerged the wraith – ghosts of the long dead who gorge on the energy sucked from the city’s dwindling population. Desperate to contain the threat, the government enclosed the city in a giant dome, trapping the wraith and the residents inside. Now, there’s almost nothing left. Sydney Cale – a thief with a strange and secret power – attempts to escape from the city’s jailers, only to find herself facing off against the wraith. She teams up with Alain, a raven shapeshifter who is a member of the Order of the Reapers, a powerful force who work to banish the wraith back to the underworld. Alain agrees to protect Sydney and her friend Diana in exchange for her help. She must enter the Citadel – the wraith compound in the center of the city – and steal back his kidnapped daughter. But what Sydney finds inside the Citadel will change everything. The wraith are evolving, drawing energy from the decaying city itself. Soon, they will be powerful enough to break free of the dome. Sydney and Alain must stop the wraith before they escape and infect the world, even if that means dooming themselves, and everyone they love, to petrifying inside the dying city.
