Hunters Book One 2017

I gave Zee a nod just as I turned the handle and entered the darkened room. Light hurts them so I switched it on and let it flood the space. It was a standard sized bedroom, nothing special about it. A once white wardrobe rested against one wall, it looked old and had faded over time. My eyes moved to the locker that was pine. It was bare of any ornaments and sat tightly against the single bed that the girl lay on. Her body was partially naked and her long blonde hair was stuck to her neck with sweat. I couldn’t make out her features as her face was no longer human looking, neither were the hands that rested on her swollen abdomen. I turned to the man to give him a piece of my mind for forgetting to tell us this one small detail, but he had bolted, leaving us with his pregnant and possessed daughter.
Words of another language and another time came out of the girl’s mouth, more than likely cursing us into the ground or into hell.
Zee’s hands moved robotically, taking items out of his trench coat. He placed two small white candles on the window sill, but didn’t light them – they were a just in case. He stayed close to them, but leaned against the wall. His presence dominated the space and he looked so large in the small room.
“Do you want to do it or shall I?” I asked.
I always gave him the option; he did most of the work, but I hated tiring him out.
He gave me the once-over, considering if I was strong enough. “You go ahead. I’ll observe,” he finally answered.
My moving towards the girl caused the demon inside her to rev up, making her body move at all the wrong angles.
I splashed her with the holy water. It bubbled up on her skin, the vapor rising and disappearing. A hiss left her mouth and more words followed. Taking out the bible, I turned to the page where the most powerful prayer lay, holding the cross steadily in my hands I started,
We drive you from us,
Whoever you may be,
Unclean spirits,
All satanic powers,
All infernal invaders,
All wicked legions,
Assemblies and sects.
In the name, and by the power of Our Lord Jesus Christ,
May you be snatched away and driven from the Church of God,
And from the souls made to the image and likeness of God,
And redeemed by the Precious Blood of the Divine Lamb.
The sound of laughter made me stop. As the demon overtook the girl’s face completely, my heart rate elevated. Zee, quick to act, lit two candles, knowing what was to come as the light bulb brightened, casting a blinding light in the room before it exploded and small shards of glass flew into the air. I covered my face, protecting it from the onslaught of the flying glass. Small cuts across my hands stung and warm blood slid slowly down my fingers. I took my hands away, ignoring the pain. The flames from the small candles Zee had lit danced across the room but gave little light. Not being able to see fully always made a possession more frightening; no matter how many times I did it, it never got easier.
“Aaabbbiiigggaaaiilll,” the demon hissed inside the girl, slowly stretching my name, but I heard it. My body responded, causing me to stumble back, never before had a demon or spirit spoke my name. I stood paralyzed.
“Abigail,” this time it was Zee and I could hear the warning in his voice.
I needed to continue. I sucked in a deep breath and wiped the blood from my hands onto my jeans. I started the prayer again, saying it faster, and louder. My voice trembled slightly. I was shaken after hearing that thing say my name. The demon inside the girl roared to life and squirmed with a voracity that shook the bed savagely. The bed’s thin, wooden legs slammed into the carpet, the noise drowning out my words, but I didn’t stop. I couldn’t stop for fear of what might happen. I continued as pictures fell from the walls, their frames snapping with the impact and the glass shattering across our feet. The curtains billowed now from an unseen wind. The bed continued to move rapidly. And the large wardrobe shook violently, its doors swinging open and closed, the sharp bang lifting my heart every time. Zee stood protecting the candles from the breeze that raced through the room, carrying the foul stench of an unwashed body. I spoke louder closing my eyes, forcing myself to stay focused, even against the activity in the room. I clung to the cross. As my grip tightened it caused my cuts to bleed, coating my hand once again. I could feel the cross slipping and soon my hand was empty.

Review of The Watcher
3.5 stars

The Watcher is story about angels and demons, but I love how it’s different than others I have read. It’s not your simple forbidden love, but the seven deadly sins come into play and for me I just loved that. I know we only see two in play in this book, but I loved the angle the author came from making it stand out for me more than other books of its kind.
I loved some of the descriptions that Mia gives us while she is in awe of Michael’s wings, or the sound of his voice. I could almost feel what she was saying, it was very well explained.
The plot itself was really good it wasn’t just forbidden love, but the twist at the end with Damiel was just brilliant and one I didn’t expect, and Mia’s understanding of how envy worked really blow me away, it was great thinking and I loved it.

But in saying all that the reason I gave this book only 3.5 stars was the characters. I just for the life of me couldn’t connect with Mia or Michael. Mia was understanding in so many ways, that I found myself disagreeing with her. I couldn’t picture her at all, and I felt nothing really for her. As for Michael I felt he was weak and his love for Mia overshadowed everything else. The one Character I loved and she wasn’t in it much was Michael’s sponsor Arielle, I found she had a strong voice, she was willing to get the job done, and most of the explaining of what was going on came from her. She was a character that I could connect with and see. Also Heather and Fiona just seemed selfish to me. But this is just my opinion and mine alone.

While reading some of the other reviews I see a lot of people compared this book to Hush, Hush and I didn’t like that book at all I think I rated it like two stars. So for lovers of Hush, Hush and Forbidden love with Angels – you may love The Watchers.

I received this book from the Author for an honest review.

Review of World After

Rating: 4 stars

Angel Fall the first book was outstanding for its originality. World after was outstanding for its horror.

Some of the horror was towards the end of book one, but in World After it was on full throttle. Angels are experimenting on humans, turning them into monsters the fact that they don’t just do this man (not that it’s okay) No they take women and even children. This is tough to read especially with Paige being only seven. She’s stitched like a doll, her teeth sharp – made of steel and she’s a cannibal, yet she is only a little girl on the inside who wants to be loved, but  Penryn struggles with this. I don’t blame her Paige sounds freaky. But when Paige runs away Penryn realises it’s still her little sister and tries to track her down.

Raffe thinks Penryn is dead so she’s on her own with her “crazy” mother and Clara a women who was used to feed scorpion angels in book one. But Penryn saved her but Clara is not right she’s a shadow of her former self and has aged rapidly from her horrible experience in the lab.

While searching for her sister, Penryn her mum and Clara end up in Alcatraz and we see how the angel scorpions are been made, the most disturbing part was the amount of humans helping. While there Penryn watches a tape of her sister from the day she was taken and I think it takes another chunk from her heart, it broke mine. As Penryn continues her search her responsibility of people to save keeps growing and her family are pushed further away from her. It’s not until Raffe shows up that Penryn can take a breather but not for long as both of them go after Biebel. Raffe for his wings and Penryn for her sister once again.

An amazing yet horrifying journey that’s not over and I can’t wait for the next book.

It’s been six weeks since angels of the apocalypse descended to demolish the modern world. Street gangs rule the day while fear and superstition rule the night. When warrior angels fly away with a helpless little girl, her seventeen-year-old sister Penryn will do anything to get her back.

Anything, including making a deal with an enemy angel.

Raffe is a warrior who lies broken and wingless on the street. After eons of fighting his own battles, he finds himself being rescued from a desperate situation by a half-starved teenage girl.

Traveling through a dark and twisted Northern California, they have only each other to rely on for survival. Together, they journey toward the angels’ stronghold in San Francisco where she’ll risk everything to rescue her sister and he’ll put himself at the mercy of his greatest enemies for the chance to be made whole again.

Recommended for ages 16 and up.

Review of Angelfall

Rating: 5 stars

www.reviewoffantasy.com

This has to be one of the most original stories I have read in a long time. Angels roam the earth, and the human species is dwindling fast. The angels aren’t here to help us, they’re here to destroy us.

Penryn the main character was so realistic with her judgement calls, she was no hero her main concerns where her sister Paige and her mother. That’s until Raffe an angel at deaths door presents itself with an opportunity. He can help her find her sister who was taken by the angels. Raffe is no ordinary angel he’s an archangel and one with a conscience. It isn’t exactly a love story that blossoms between them but more of an understanding that their not that different – angels and humans, and soon they see past their differences and help each other for Penryn it’s to save her sister and for Raffe it’s to have his wings sown back on.

Penryn mother is unhinged even before the angels arrived she spoke of demons and things she could see her abuse towards her daughters has left Penryn with little time for her, and Paige at the age of seven in a wheelchair. It’s sad but the author manages to cover up this with humour and I couldn’t stop laughing. Every time her mother did something bonkers. By the end of the book I questioned if her mother was really insane, or if all she saw was the truth, and her actions have meaning. She seems to survive in the most extreme situation.

The end broke my heart. … O so may are damaged, so much hope is lost and the horror that the angels wreck on the world had my skin crawling.

Something new and fresh now off to read World After .
