excerpt

We hit the water with such force that it felt like every bone in my body shattered as I hit the dash at full impact. White searing pain tore through me. I screamed only to have my lungs fill with water. I was dying, and I wished it would come quickly. My lungs burned for air and my body screamed for release from the agony. I couldn’t see anything as blackness surrounded me. I needed to see Zee one last time, but my body shook as if electricity were racing through it, then all my pain was gone and a feeling of nothingness consumed me.

Light shone in the distance, like a torch hovering over a well, bouncing off rocks, only blinking mildly. I finally understood what people meant when they claimed to have seen the light before passing. I felt the sensation of floating and yet nothingness. My body moved closer to the light. It was getting brighter and more intense. I wanted to shield my eyes, but the movement wasn’t allowed. I wasn’t whole, yet I felt the same.

The light made my body feel warm, not warm as in fuzzy and nice, but warm as in I needed shade. The signs of a day starting out mild, but the warning that it would be hot. Hot is what I started to feel. Nothing seemed right. I wasn’t floating up or down I just seemed to be still. As the light sent out burning rays and the agony of it pierced me, balls of flames started to lick my feet and I started to scream. I watched my feet and legs appear as the fire burned them. The higher the flames went, the more of myself I could see and the long hands that stretched towards me, pulling me down. My throat let out a scream as I fought to move, but I had nothing around me to grab onto. My skin was burning, melting off my body. The bony fingers of the dead dug into my burning flesh.

I was nearly consumed in the flames before I realized my name was being called behind me. I turned to see Zee with his arms outstretched.  His mouth was moving, but I couldn’t hear as the roars still ripped from my throat. Then his arms were around me, pulling me out of the flames. My body was screaming and then all was gone.

***

I opened my eyes. My body shook with the cold. My vision filled with Zee’s chest as he held me firmly against him, rocking me gently, like a mother would a distressed child. I couldn’t speak as my teeth chattered. My body didn’t burn anymore. I was so cold, so numb. I didn’t look around me, too afraid of what I would see.

“Flames… hands… my flesh… it burned.” I knew I was rambling, words of utter disbelief falling from my blue lips. “Light… then flames,” my words choked on a sob. I was going to hell. I was going to hell. I was a bad person. No heaven. No Sam. Hell. The arms that were wrapped around me, I tried to push away, but he hung on to me, pulling me closer. He didn’t understand; he was good, an angel. I shouldn’t touch him, I was bad.

“Let. Meeee. Go!” My voice shook. “Please…”

Zee’s arms loosened and I could feel his body shift as his eyes fell on my face. I didn’t meet his eyes, but crawled out of his lap. He didn’t stop me. He didn’t look away from me either. I sat on all fours, my hair wet, hanging in front of my face as my body shook uncontrollably. Then I started to laugh I met Zee’s confused stare and my laughter turned hysterical.

“Abigail?” He moved towards me, worry etched on his face, but I let out a roar, making him stop.

“Don’t come near me. You should have let me die.”

He was beside me before I could blink, holding my numb face, his anger making his eyes darken.  “Don’t ever say that. Ever!” he said.

I shook my head in his hands as tears fell from my eyes. “I was going to hell. To hell!”

I was waiting for him to drop his hands, run from me, and understand his mistake of giving up everything to stay with someone like me, but he didn’t. Instead, he moved towards me, his breath visible in front of my face. I could hear sirens in the distance, but my mind was occupied with Zee. I closed my eyes as his face was only an inch from mine. His lips kissed my left eyelid and then slowly, moved over to my right one. The motion was gentle, the kiss so filled with despair and love that the tears rolled from my closed eyes and warmed my cheeks.

“I’m so sorry, Abigail. I truly am.” His words were so sad, so heartfelt.

My eyes opened and I could see tears in his eyes. One fell, and I watched it make a path down his perfect, clear skin. My hand reached out and caught the tear before tracing his jawline. I wanted to tell him that I loved him so badly and tell him how I didn’t deserve his tears, but my own eyes blurred over again with sorrow.

“Are you okay?” The shouts of a man making his way down the bank pulled us apart as I took in the scene up on the bridge.

People had gathered, watching us, some with their phones out taking photos. A fire engine sat on the bridge, its lights flashing. The man reached us, taking in our unmarked bodies, not as much as a scratch. Paramedics arrived. Two of them fell to their knees in front of me, shining a light in my eyes, but everything felt surreal, as they examined me, shaking their heads in disbelief. The tears continued to roll down my face. My body never moved as they searched me for something broken or something torn, but I knew they would find nothing. I felt so empty, so devoid of emotion, even as I cried.

Father Peter filled my vision as he raced down the bank. Two policemen tried to stop him, but he pushed them away.

“She is my daughter,” he said, causing some serious confusion amongst the men. He was a priest; they couldn’t marry and most certainly, couldn’t have children.

He reached me and my body was crushed against his.  He pulled back, his mouth moving, but I couldn’t focus on his words. My mind was filled with images of hands pulling me, flames burning me and Zee saving me, yet again.

I was pulled along until we reached the car. My head was ducked down as I sat in the back of Father Peter’s Car. Zee slid in beside me, pulling me into his side. I didn’t stop him. I didn’t do anything.

Father Peter, started to drive, “Abigail, please!” he said. I could hear the fear in his voice.

“She’s in shock. Give her some time.” Zee’s chest rumbled as the words left his mouth, but I didn’t respond. I stayed silent the whole drive back to my apartment.

Hunters Book One 2017

I gave Zee a nod just as I turned the handle and entered the darkened room. Light hurts them so I switched it on and let it flood the space. It was a standard sized bedroom, nothing special about it. A once white wardrobe rested against one wall, it looked old and had faded over time. My eyes moved to the locker that was pine. It was bare of any ornaments and sat tightly against the single bed that the girl lay on. Her body was partially naked and her long blonde hair was stuck to her neck with sweat. I couldn’t make out her features as her face was no longer human looking, neither were the hands that rested on her swollen abdomen. I turned to the man to give him a piece of my mind for forgetting to tell us this one small detail, but he had bolted, leaving us with his pregnant and possessed daughter.
Words of another language and another time came out of the girl’s mouth, more than likely cursing us into the ground or into hell.
Zee’s hands moved robotically, taking items out of his trench coat. He placed two small white candles on the window sill, but didn’t light them – they were a just in case. He stayed close to them, but leaned against the wall. His presence dominated the space and he looked so large in the small room.
“Do you want to do it or shall I?” I asked.
I always gave him the option; he did most of the work, but I hated tiring him out.
He gave me the once-over, considering if I was strong enough. “You go ahead. I’ll observe,” he finally answered.
My moving towards the girl caused the demon inside her to rev up, making her body move at all the wrong angles.
I splashed her with the holy water. It bubbled up on her skin, the vapor rising and disappearing. A hiss left her mouth and more words followed. Taking out the bible, I turned to the page where the most powerful prayer lay, holding the cross steadily in my hands I started,
We drive you from us,
Whoever you may be,
Unclean spirits,
All satanic powers,
All infernal invaders,
All wicked legions,
Assemblies and sects.
In the name, and by the power of Our Lord Jesus Christ,
May you be snatched away and driven from the Church of God,
And from the souls made to the image and likeness of God,
And redeemed by the Precious Blood of the Divine Lamb.
The sound of laughter made me stop. As the demon overtook the girl’s face completely, my heart rate elevated. Zee, quick to act, lit two candles, knowing what was to come as the light bulb brightened, casting a blinding light in the room before it exploded and small shards of glass flew into the air. I covered my face, protecting it from the onslaught of the flying glass. Small cuts across my hands stung and warm blood slid slowly down my fingers. I took my hands away, ignoring the pain. The flames from the small candles Zee had lit danced across the room but gave little light. Not being able to see fully always made a possession more frightening; no matter how many times I did it, it never got easier.
“Aaabbbiiigggaaaiilll,” the demon hissed inside the girl, slowly stretching my name, but I heard it. My body responded, causing me to stumble back, never before had a demon or spirit spoke my name. I stood paralyzed.
“Abigail,” this time it was Zee and I could hear the warning in his voice.
I needed to continue. I sucked in a deep breath and wiped the blood from my hands onto my jeans. I started the prayer again, saying it faster, and louder. My voice trembled slightly. I was shaken after hearing that thing say my name. The demon inside the girl roared to life and squirmed with a voracity that shook the bed savagely. The bed’s thin, wooden legs slammed into the carpet, the noise drowning out my words, but I didn’t stop. I couldn’t stop for fear of what might happen. I continued as pictures fell from the walls, their frames snapping with the impact and the glass shattering across our feet. The curtains billowed now from an unseen wind. The bed continued to move rapidly. And the large wardrobe shook violently, its doors swinging open and closed, the sharp bang lifting my heart every time. Zee stood protecting the candles from the breeze that raced through the room, carrying the foul stench of an unwashed body. I spoke louder closing my eyes, forcing myself to stay focused, even against the activity in the room. I clung to the cross. As my grip tightened it caused my cuts to bleed, coating my hand once again. I could feel the cross slipping and soon my hand was empty.

What is the name of your character?

The Name of my Character is Abigail Thornton. She’s Nineteen and a Demon Hunter.

Is she fictional or a historic person?

Demon Hunter? Fictional I would say. LOL

2) When and where is the story set?

The story is set in our world (Earth) most of it is set in England and the rest in Rome.

3) What should we know about her?

Well Abigail has no living family, she witnessed the death of her mother, then her father and brother but she was saved by Daniel. Abigail has lots of her own demons but she found a way to deal with them, Alcohol. After being taken in by a priest he teaches her to become a demon hunter, and she’s good at what she does. O did I mention that she can see ghosts. J

4) What is the main conflict? What messes up her life?

Her feelings for Daniel really cause serious problems; he’s her best friend, her savoir in ways.  Yet she won’t let him see how she feels. Abigail’s main fear is of losing one more person that she loves, so she chooses to keep people at arm’s length. Her past comes back to haunt her also, when ghosts start attacking her, and her brother makes an appearance, she can’t cope so she turns to drink but soon everything starts to spiral out of control. So her life is pretty messed up.

5) What is the personal goal of the character?

To understand what really happened to her family.

6) Is there a working title for this novel, and can we read more about it?

Yes it’s called Hunters (Hunters #1). The first chapter you can read for free at http://www.aoifemariesheridan.com/hunters-chapter-one.php

7) When can we expect the book to be published?

The release date for Hunters is the 1st of October 2014.

This is one of the most amazing stories of our lives.

We’d met each other through a mutual friend on facebook more than two years ago. We shared the same interests – more or less – and had the pretty much the same kind of dark sense of humor. So basically, we hit it off quite fabulously and added each other to our profiles, high fived at every mutual respect, or lack thereof, for current issues and personal affairs until one fine day, one of us came up with this brilliant exercise. The ‘one’ being Shamila – inboxed about 30 ladies with the intent of starting a ‘I write the first line and you all join in and let’s make a story!’ event.

Truth be told, no one was really interested and thought it to be rather boring. To make up for that, it became more of a ‘who can write the craziest line.’ And as expected, each line was taken to bizarre places where even Superman would wonder – is this even possible?  After the few weeks and numerous face palms, it quietened down till something wonderful happened.

One of the girls wrote a single line about the heroine of the story landing in the bedroom of an unknown person. That sparked a fire in one of our brains. That brain, in this case was Humeira’s. A whole paragraph was written that day just to make this turn happen in the story. And it did. And although, one by one, everyone else had stopped writing (and reading) the posts, we both stuck to it.  Turn by turn, we continued. So much so that we had two full pages of the tale. We then decided to close that session and start a new one including just us and two other friends who had proved themselves to be loyal readers of everything that we had written so far.

And so we wrote and we wrote. Chapter after chapter after chapter after chapter. While Humzy and T-Man read it and critiqued it. We had moved to email by then since it felt more personal and private. This delicious ritual of writing continued for two whole years. What had started as an idle facebook fluke became a full fledged novel boasting of two hefty parts (read BOOKS!).

The first book AOIFE AND DEMON: CURSED BE THE SYHLAINS has now met the approval of an editor (with some very good reviews, might we add) and we are just ironing out the last minute details before getting it published.  It’s coming soon  and YOU need to keep your eyes peeled for anything from Humeira and Shamila!

Trust us – it’ll be awesome 😉
