Genre:  Romance/Science Fiction/Fantasy

Dates: 21st – 25th of May

Hosted by: Ultimate Fantasy Book Tours

With two coronations to attend, you’d think the universe would stop piling catastrophes on top of Louella Eschete, but you’d be dead wrong. As she prepares to ascend two thrones, one as Lady of the Cortez Vampire Court and the other as Matriarch of the Eschete Witches, she must face a new evil.
Just when Lou is ready to stab a seamstress with a hat pin, murder and strange occurrences begin to happen around her city. Stolen corpses in the cemetery, decapitated astronomers, and hearts taken from nursing homes is odd, even for Louisiana. There is no rhyme or reason to the carnage, but the sigil left behind at a scene points to something ancient.
It’s a race against the clock for humanity. There’ll be nothing to rule if everyone’s dead.

“I never… I would never,” she stutters and I laugh and tut at her.

“I know that, girl. As if anyone would put a hand on me.” I turn away, my stomach flutters with excitement knowing what I have to do, what I need to do.

I picture her flirting in my mind but it isn’t enough so I let the thought of her kissing Nierra enter and my blood boils in my veins. I can feel the heat rise in my face, my heartbeat pulses at my neck and I swallow a scream. Nails bite into my palms and my breathing becomes laboured. I can hear her call me, her voice is the final touch and I roar in pain as I rake my nails down my face, I don’t stop until I draw blood. My frenzy ends abruptly and the burning from my scratches has me wincing. I turn back to the girl; her hand covers her mouth, her eyes wide. She looks gray , a color I have never seen on anyone before, and I wonder if she dying. I hope not.

Brandy Isaacs will tell you first that her name is spelled without an “I”. If that is the case, I will call her Brandy Isaacs. However, that ends up sounding like “Sacks” and will not endear me to her. Just remember, no I. The I is trashy as a terminal vowel.

She was raised in in Kentucky, but not the kentuck of the 70s where people had to dig holes for both one and two. It was a more cosmopolitan version of the place you’re thinking of. Instead of digging those holes, her family was able to hire someone to dig them – big difference. They did, however, love when the Sears Wishbook showed up in the mail each year. They were finally able to stop rubbing dirt in dirtier places.

None of that is true.

But all of it is true.

You’re author is one of those curious people. She is of the library and the local witches. She loved words. Even better, she loved when those words were strung together.

In a word – stories.

Those stories, of witches that were real and those that were not; of boy wizards; of young women who volunteered; of men who would suck blood. These stories define her.

And it is stories that she wants to tell you. I could gloss her Bio for real – high school, college in central Kentucky, Grad school in Kansas, nonprofit work when she returned home – and it would miss the truth. Brandy Isaacs has stories inside her, and she need to tell them to you.

They will excite you; they will scare you; they will arouse you.

And you- — you will keep turning the pages. When you hit the end, you will wish there were more.

Social Media/Marketing

It’s an understatement to say that technology has change the world in the last 100 years or so.  The world of writing and publishing is not an exception to this fact.  Before, writer’s handwrote or typed their work, mailed it off to publishers and hoped for the best.  It was a much slower and arduous process than it is today.  And if publishers or editors didn’t like your work?  There wasn’t much you could do about it.  Today there are many more options and writers have more freedom than in the past.

With the advent of social media, crowdfunding, and independent publishers, a whole new world opened up to writers—and readers.  I believe the market today is much more fan based and individual driven.  Thanks to the immediate nature of social media and the internet age, writers are better able to own their work and find their own markets.  If a publisher isn’t interested in your type of fantasy—you can find your own audience.  And it’s out there.

For better or worse, there is a market for pretty much anything these days.  I.e. dinosaur porn literature is a thing.  Seriously!  Look it up at your own risk.  And I’m by no means judging—to each their own.  The fact that (bizarre) fiction such as this exists is proof that technology has blown open the doors to make the public vastly more accessible than it has been before.

For anyone who chooses the independent publishing route I can whole-heartily assure you it will be an amazing journey that will be exhausting, challenging and incredibly rewarding.  To gain any amount of success at all, you have to be prepared to do your own marketing and this is most easily and cheaply done through social media.  Sites like Amazon, Goodreads, Twitter, and Facebook allow you to control your own brand—your own message.  Your audience might be out there waiting for you—but you have to find it yourself.

I can also tell you that one of your best resources will be other writers.  There will always be nasty people in the world—but, as a whole, writers that I have encountered are waiting to help other writers.  We all know the struggle—it’s real!  We also know how important writing is to ourselves and others.  We know what it feels like to create a baby and try to share it with the world.

Writers, bloggers, fans, reviewers, etc. have already found audiences.  And instead of jealously guarding what they have—they very often are just waiting to share it.  The world of independent publishing and writing, in my experience, is one built upon connections and friendships.  Need reviews?  Someone else does to.  We are always on the lookout for opportunities to connect and get the word out for our work and love returning the favor.

Anyone who wants to be a writer and decides to go the independent route and doesn’t utilize social media is missing out on a huge opportunity.  Social media is—by its very nature—an audience waiting for entertainment.  Get involved in reading groups.  Blogs.  Follow other writers.  Make friends.  Because at the heart of it all—we are a bunch of nerds who love books and want to share them with other people.  We are just waiting to share yours.

Spotlight for Author, John Fioravanti ~ Blog Tour

Hi, I’m John Fioravanti, and welcome to my fourth blog post of my “Spotlight Blog Tour” sponsored by my family at Rave Reviews Book Club. I’m ver grateful to be a guest today with Aoife Sheridan.

In my last post, I gave everyone a sneak peek at my first Sci-Fi novel, Passion & Struggle. (Has Professor Rossini showed up yet? No? Keep an eye out…) In this post, I’m telling you the story about how I came to write my first novel in a Sci-Fi universe created by another author… at his invitation – well, it was more of a challenge…

Teaching Cover

The idea for a new series written inside an existing sci-fi universe was born on a gorgeous summer afternoon in August of 2006. I was sitting under the umbrella of our deck table thumbing through The Genesis Equation by Kenneth Tam. This fifth book in his Equations series was published the previous month. I was ruminating on the Equations universe that Kenneth had created while still a high school student. I loved the series and was quite taken with his Earthers, as well as his human characters.
On this particular afternoon I was awaiting the arrival of my friend Kenneth, who wished to discuss one of the early drafts of A Personal Journey to the Heart of Teaching, which I was writing for his family’s company – Iceberg Publishing. That day, however, I was preoccupied by questions about the Equations universe.
We both enjoyed these visits and we still do despite the fact that I’m no longer an Iceberg author. Now Kenneth characterizes our meetings as “publisher summits”! Eight years ago, I think it is fair to say that Kenneth and I recognized that despite our age difference, we were kindred spirits as writers and Trekkies. So our visits were, and still are, very animated and intellectually stimulating.
This particular day’s meeting began with a discussion about the edited draft of Journey that Kenneth had brought with him. There were revisions and rewrites necessary, as well as requests for additional material that would turn into new chapters. We were excited by the project, so the discussion was lively and constructive.
When that business concluded I asked Kenneth if we could discuss The Genesis Equation. He grinned, “Did you like it?” I assured him that I thoroughly enjoyed the story, but I had some questions that were bothering me. Without saying anything, he gestured that I should continue. Hoping that I wouldn’t upset him, I asked why he had left a gap of forty years between books four and five. It was peacetime on Genesis, he explained, so he picked up the story at the point where a new conflict was starting.
“But what about Pat and Sarah?” I shot back. “Book four ends with the Genesis Navy returning home from the Krogg War. Pat and Sarah had decided to marry and they had an engagement party onboard the flagship of the fleet. Then I pick up Book five and discover that they had been married for forty years, and Genesis was such a different place after that period of time! Good Grief!”
Kenneth shrugged, “All true. But for me the next big development was the return of Omega.”
“Oh,” was my immediate response, before I tried once more. “I’m sure the marriages of Pat and Sarah, and of Graham and Gillian would have been terrific stories… And I’ll bet the Earther Navy brass would have showed up for that! Now that would have been exciting for the main characters as well as for the people of Genesis.”
Kenneth nodded, but didn’t interrupt. So I continued my diatribe.
“And how did the democratic government on Genesis come about from a Church dictatorship? That must have been a fascinating process to behold! When did an Earther embassy get established on Genesis? How did that go over with the Churchers who weren’t happy about the wartime alliance with them? There’s so much to explain!”
I stopped and studied my friend carefully to see if I had offended him. On the contrary, he seemed amused – and interested. Finally he leaned forward in his chair: “So… why don’t you write those stories?”
I was aghast, instantly thinking: He can’t be serious, I’ve never written fiction in my life.
When I actually voiced those thoughts, he pointed out that I had never written an autobiographical account of my teaching career before, either. Kenneth was enjoying turning the tables on me. It was clear I had never expected that kind of response.
We sat in thoughtful silence for a few minutes, sipping our drinks, before I spoke up again: “Two questions: first, are you serious about me writing inside your series, and second, do you honestly think I can pull it off?”
“Yes, and definitely yes,” he replied without delay. “Writing fiction is different than writing non-fiction, but you can learn. We’ll help you.”
His eyes were earnest and confident. I looked down at my drink, picked up my copy of The Genesis Equation, and made my decision. I told him I’d start the project as soon as Journey was ready for publication.

I had no idea what I would call the series that sunny afternoon in August, 2006, nor did I have any idea how many books there might be. But I had a universe that was already created, and I had a beginning and end point. For the next eight years my mind churned away happily dreaming up plots and sub-plots – new characters and a more detailed Genesis society. This fall, those stories will begin to told, as The Genesis Saga.

John Fioravanti is a retired secondary school educator who completed his thirty-five year career in the classroom in June, 2008. His teaching career was split between two schools: St. Benedict CSS in Cambridge, Ontario and St. David CSS in Waterloo, Ontario.

Throughout his career, John focused on developing research, analysis, and essay writing skills in his History Classroom. This led to the publication of his first non-fiction work for student use, Getting It Right in History Class (Data Based Directions, 2002), along with an international version of the same title. A Personal Journey to the Heart of Teaching  Iceberg Publishing, 2007, 2008, 2010) (Fiora Books 2014) is his second non-fiction work; it attempts to crystallize the struggles, accomplishments, and setbacks experienced in more than three decades of effort to achieve excellence in his chosen field.

John’s first work of fiction is Passion & Struggle and is set within Kenneth Tam’s Equations universe (Iceberg Publishing). He claims that, after two non-fiction books, he’s having the time of his life bringing new stories and characters to life!

At present, John lives in Waterloo, Ontario with Anne, his bride of forty-one years. They have three children and three grandchildren. In December of 2013, John and Anne founded Fiora Books for the express purpose of publishing John’s books. After four decades of marriage, they decided to become business partners as well.

About the Author:

Inge-Lise Goss was born in Denmark, raised in Utah and graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Utah. She is a Certified Public Accountant and worked in that field for over twenty years. She now lives in the foothills of Red Rock Canyon with her husband and their dog, Bran, where she spends most of her time in her den writing stories dictated by her muse. When she’s not pounding away on the keyboard she can be found reading, rowing, or trying to perfect her golf game.

Where can we find you?:

Novel: The Tegen Cave

Author: Inge-Lise Goss

Question: What have you published recently?

My first novel, The Tegen Cave, a dark fantasy, was published in 2013 by Silver Tongue Press. In May of this year, The Cost of Crude, a mystery/thriller, was released by the same publisher.

Question: How, and when, did you decide to become a writer?

Dreams. They were so vivid and kept swirling around in my head when I was awake. Then I started getting this nagging feeling I should put them on paper. Initially the task seemed to daunting so I tried to wipe the whole idea out of my mind. But instead, the same story invaded my dreams over and over again. I felt my subconscious was forcing me to try my hand at writing. That’s when I knew I had to give it a shot. I was surprised how easy the words flowed and became convinced a muse was guiding my fingers over the keyboard.

Question: Where can we find your published writing?

Amazon US:

Amazon UK:

Question: What is a typical day like for you as a writer?

My typical day isn’t all that exciting. I wake up around 6:30 a.m. and force my feet to the floor. After slipping on a pair of yoga pants, t-shirt and shoes, I trudge down the stairs to a rowing machine and drop down into its seat. I push on ear buds, flip on the music, and listen to rock-n-roll while I row to the beat for twenty-five minutes. As I continue enjoying the music, I head out the front door and walk a mile.

Feeling sweaty when I return home, instead of grabbing a bottle of water, I gulp down a cup of coffee. I pour a bowl of cereal and drench it with blue berries. Breezing through the newspaper, I chat with my husband about a few of the articles. Then I fill my coffee mug and move to the den on the second floor.

I turn on my computer and check emails. Satisfied I have responded to everything, well, almost everything that needs my attention, I open the file containing my current project. My daily goal is to be writing by 10 a.m. That’s also the time when my muse is up and ready to get to work. In fact, she pouts when I’m running late or she’s been ignored for a few days.

Around noon, I take a short break for lunch. When I return to the keyboard, the adventure springs back into my head and my fingers punch a way again.  At 4:30 p.m. my alarm buzzes signalling me that it’s time to wrap up my writing, but my muse normally keeps me at the computer for at least another fifty minutes. Then I finally hit the save button, lean back in the chair, and close my eyes. I gather my thoughts and put the story to rest for the day.

I quickly shuck my clothing and hurry into the shower. As soon as I step out of the bathroom, cocktails are poured. After dinner, when I don’t have plans for the evening, I curl up on the couch and read or watch TV.

Question: What types of writing do you do?

The first three novels I wrote were from first person viewpoint. As I wrote them, I never knew what was going to happen next. I was always anxious to get back to the story. Hopefully, readers will feel the same way when they read The Tegen Cave. The Cost of Crude, my second published novel is written in third person. It was just as exciting to write as the first person novels. My writing style tends to fluctuate depending on the story. It’s fun to try new things and explore different genres.

Question: What are your favorite characters that you have created? Tell us about them.

I like writing about strong female characters that learn to handle themselves in dangerous and frightening situations. I also like mysterious male characters that have a dark side.

Sara Jones, the protagonist in The Tegen Cave, is an independent, 24-year-old woman who fell in love with a member of a crime family. Realizing the truth about her boyfriend, she leaves him and hopes she has covered her trail well. After she becomes involved with another man, her 25th birthday approaches and her bodily desires become uncontrollable, desires that he satisfies. When she discovered he’s a member of a bloodthirsty group that uses spiders to incapacitate their prey, she flees. I like this character because she grows both mentally and physically as the story unfolds.

Brett Daborel is a strong, gorgeous-looking man who possesses paranormal abilities. He’s an awesome lover, yet dangerous. Brett can easily attract a woman’s attention and just as easily he can become the target of skilled thugs, but to tangle with him could lead to deadly consequences.

Question: do you find you “mentally edit” other writers’ works as you read them? Does doing this help you or bother you?

Since I started writing, I find I’m doing it all the time. If the novel is in dire need of editing, it trumps the story. Then, I’m spending all my time “mentally editing” it instead of following the storyline. When that happens, I stop reading that novel and move on to another one.

Question: What music do you listen to, while writing?

None.  I find it distracts from the story buzzing around in my head wanting to flow on the page. I’m just not good at multi-tasking. Yes, I can exercise, drive or clean house and listen to music at the same time, but that’s about it.

Question: What do you eat while writing?

Nothing.  Chewing affects me the same way as listening to music.

Five for Fun:

What is your favourite non-alcoholic drink?

Lipton’s Diet Green Tea

What is your favourite cartoon character?

Stewie Griffin in Family Guy

What is your favourite movie of all time?

Boy it’s a tossup between The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Sleeper and Young Frankenstein.

What TV shows do you like to watch?

Under the Doom, CSI, CSI-Los Angeles, True Blood (unfortunately, that series has ended), Elementary, Person of Interest, The Mentalist and the PBS shows: Poirot, Sherlock Holmes, Mid-Summer Mysteries, and Downton Abby.

What do you like to do for fun or just to relax?

Travel, read, golf, and play board games.

Question: Where can we find you on the web?

Why I Write

I won’t lie; I’d love to earn enough from sales of my books to be able to make a living doing what I love, which is writing, if you haven’t guessed! I also enjoy being able to write the kind of stories I like to read, but the main reason I write, is this:

“Okay so my plan yesterday was to take a step back, digest book 1 In Chains, read another book THEN come back to this one.  But as I sat my desk trying to do something else, my eyes kept going to my Kindle. So I told myself I’ll just read the first chapter and then take a break. Yeah six hours later (and many curse words), I’m setting my Kindle down with the biggest smile on my face.

Kayden and Savannah’s journey began in book 1 and concludes in Book 2. Wow! What a hell they’ve been through. Kayden captured my heart right away in book 1.  Because of who he was, he had his own obstacles in his way. I laughed so hard in Book 1 because of one of them.

In book 2, their journey continues as they literally fight for survival. As if their circumstances weren’t enough to handle, they had people trying to mess with their heads about the other’s true feelings.

Savannah’s problem was she just couldn’t keep her mouth shut or keep her opinion to herself.

Kayden made me smile and cry! OMG! Did he ever make me cry. For a good 20% I think I was cursing the author up and down for the crap she put my poor Kayden through THEN finally the last 3% I’m smiling, but that’s not without some MAJOR UGLY TEARS right before then UGH!! I was screaming at my kindle “If you do this to me, I’ll throw this Kindle across the room!” Yeah there was a good stretch there I was unbelievably mad at Savannah that if she were real I would have shaken her so hard she would have gotten whip lash. LOL

Yes I was completely consumed by this book (and the first one). Honestly it has been an amazing journey and I’m so sad to see them go. I’d love to have seen more from a certain scene, but as all good books it leaves you wanting more. Honestly I’m not sure in this series that there’d ever be enough.

If you haven’t read either of these books In Chains or Locked Together you are missing something amazing!  Seriously pick these up today!!! They are worth the time to read it. Before now, I’m sad to say I hadn’t even heard of these books or sadly the author but after reading these books, I’m a 100% HUGE fan now! Can’t wait to read more from this author. Will definitely be stalking her…I mean watching!”

I get such a high when readers love my characters as much as I do, and take the time to let me know in a review, or a message. I love it when readers are able to feel the emotional journey my characters are taking, and laugh and cry with them. The person who wrote the above review, went on to become my biggest fan and took the time to surprise me with a book trailer and teaser graphic that she’d made. She touched my heart with her thoughtfulness, and I got to feel famous for a while J

Spotlight for Blood Bound by Author Sharon Stevenson

Blood Bound 1

19-year-old twin demon trackers Shaun and Sarah Gallows are used to running into trouble – mostly the kind with fangs – but while Sarah embraces her powers to their fullest extent, trusting her instincts implicitly, Shaun distances himself from his abilities and can do little more than despair at his sister’s reckless nature and idly back her up.
When they come across 17-year-old Melissa Carling, a demon tracker who’s been torturing innocent super-naturals, they know they have to stop her. Sarah is desperate to punish Melissa for what she’s been doing but Shaun’s instant attraction to the girl points to a soul-mate bond stronger than anything he’s ever had to fight before…

***Be warned this book is New Adult Modern Fantasy, not YA. It is not suitable for younger readers as it contains profanity & sexual references.

Sarah Gallows in action by Laura Boland

A soft sigh pulled Shaun’s attention down to his twin sister.  Sarah stood steady beside him, staring into the darkness with a whisper of a smile twitching at her lips.  Her blue eyes shone bright past the dark eye-makeup.  It was time.  The energy she held so tightly coiled was ready to be unleashed.  Shaun felt the first sparks flicker from her as she slipped forward into the nest.   Shivering, he followed, ducking the doorframe.

Her right hand reached out and yanked one of the vampires out of the shadows.  The creature was a good foot taller than her and almost twice as wide but he trembled under her steady gaze, knees giving out under him.

Collective hissing from the darkness set Shaun’s nerves on edge.  There were a couple more than he’d first calculated and of the twenty presences in the room, every last glowing eye was locked on the petite blonde who’d just crashed the party.

Not one of the creatures appeared to sense Sarah’s lanky brother glowering at them with his one real eye from the shadows beside her, the usual case when she was around shining too brightly to be ignored.  Shaun half-thought Sarah did it on purpose; she worried far more than she should.  He shifted the stake in his hand, ready to strike, and looked to Sarah.

The vampire she held weakened under her touch.  He looked up at her with tears streaming down his undead face.  Blood stained his slack mouth.  The human girl he’d been feeding on lay dying on the floor under the cover of shadows, her drained body past help.  The girl’s life-force was ebbing away and yet the sympathy overflowing from his sister was being extended to the monster she held, for the awful things that had set him on this path.

Shaun frowned at her.  The vampire sobbed at her feet, clinging onto her slim legs.  She pulled back, but only to crouch down beside him.  The other eyes only watched, unblinking.

“Ssh,” she whispered, stroking the side of his face.  He shivered under the direct touch of her skin to his.  His fever-bright eyes sank into her black-hole gaze.

She had the sword in her hand before any of the vampires could react.  The blade sliced through her chosen one’s neck, unmaking him in an instant.  The smoky burnt-out mulch his body collapsed into seasoned the air.  Shaun held his breath, trying vainly not to inhale any while it still clung to the atmosphere.  The stillness in the room started to unnerve him.  The captive undead audience poised to strike, ready and remorseless.

Sarah wiped off the sword and looked up, death in her gaze.

“Who’s next?”
