Wednesday’s Featured Author is Mary Bernsen Author of Healing the Bayou

What is a Queen without her King?

After learning that she is adopted, Eliza sets off to locate her biological family and finds them in the Louisiana bayou. But they’re more than just locals—they’re descended from the area’s most famous Voodoo queen, Marie Laveau—Eliza’s great-great-grandmother. Surrounded by a mysterious world of séances, spells, and sacrifices, Eliza finds herself worshiped as the last great priestess. What’s more, she’s inherited the ability to heal the souls of others with a simple touch of her hands.

Eliza is expected to cultivate this gift so she can claim her title as Queen and return the Voodoo community to glory. A task Eliza wouldn’t mind as long as she could perform it beside the devastating Samuel Mueller. But according to tradition, Samuel is her keeper, and a keeper never becomes romantically involved with his ward. His sacred duty is to protect her. And the bayou is rife with enemies who would sacrifice anything to eliminate outsiders like Eliza…

Banner for Till Death and Beyond

Till Death and Beyond is a sizzling tale of two souls bound by destiny in a cruel plot to separate them forever…

Despite the hatred Raven harbors for their kind, he is intrigued by the witch. One taste of her lips, and she becomes his obsession. Review of Till death and beyond

Rating: 4 stars

Amira is a tortured soul, one of the most powerful witches, that’s used in a struggle with the gods to fulfil a prophecy. Each life she lives and dies through, Amira remembers, she is a person who’s so beautiful on the outside but damaged on the inside.

The Goddess tells her she will be kidnapped and no matter how she resists she must do as she told, and go to the forest while waiting to be taken. She is no more than a puppet on a string.

Raven is the one who takes her. Witchcraft is punishable by death but Raven needs her alive. All witches are believed to be cold creatures but Amira surprises Raven time and time again with her selfless acts and soon a love blossoms between them, that’s intense and serious. Raven denies his feelings telling himself it’s a spell. His own story is as tortured as Amira’s, and with a brother whose mind is almost lost Raven feels responsible for the death of his family, and his brother’s diminishing health. Taking Amira he hopes to draw out the witch that destroyed his family and kill her, in doing so freeing his brother.

When Amira arrives at this home and shows her true nature, a kind and caring person Raven can’t deny the person she is and gives into the chemistry that’s burning in both of them. But the gods won’t let it be, a prophecy needs to be fulfilled and the demon Dazlog has his oar in too. On top of that witches are still being hunted, and Amira’s family is in danger.

The story keeps on taking turns until the end and it all makes beautiful sense, but the story isn’t over and I’m looking forward to book Two.

The writing was flawless but one thing that throw me off was the constant change between Amira and Raven. It changed within paragraphs at the start I had to re-read it thinking I was wrong but after a while it didn’t bother me but just throw me at the start. I have never come across this style of storytelling before, but once I realised what was happening I didn’t mind.

Blood Bound 1

19-year-old twin demon trackers Shaun and Sarah Gallows are used to running into trouble – mostly the kind with fangs – but while Sarah embraces her powers to their fullest extent, trusting her instincts implicitly, Shaun distances himself from his abilities and can do little more than despair at his sister’s reckless nature and idly back her up.

When they come across 17-year-old Melissa Carling, a demon tracker who’s been torturing innocent super-naturals, they know they have to stop her. Sarah is desperate to punish Melissa for what she’s been doing but Shaun’s instant attraction to the girl points to a soul-mate bond stronger than anything he’s ever had to fight before…

Clueless to what his sister is going through, Shaun has been spending time in White Oaks on the pretence of training with his parents. He’s determined to find out who Elle’s working for, and he’s thinking about asking her out, maybe.

A new threat surfaces in White Oaks and the twins have to neutralise it before things get out of hand, and before the Council find out. It would just be another day’s work, if Shaun wasn’t being accused of murder and Sarah wasn’t being driven to distraction by her demon…

His werewolf curse was corrupted after he was ravaged in battle and now a witch has removed the corruption. He has days before his first shift takes all choice away from him and he becomes wolf. Can he make his decision in time, or will it be taken out of his hands?

About the Author:

Sharon Stevenson 2

I’m your typical reclusive author type. Anti-social in person, but I love tweeting online friends! I love my laptop, probably a bit too much mind you.
If you want to know more, check out my website or follow me on twitter.
I’m a reader and enjoy finding new indie authors to follow – there are so many good ones out there! I’m fairly new to posting reviews but I do try to be fair and honest and will not post anything less than 3 stars, as if it is not at least that good I just won’t finish it.

 image     image   imageimage

  1. Tell me a bit about yourself.

I’m a thirty-three year old writing machine with a fixation on the supernatural.  Being entertained is the main thing I require in life; be that through books, TV, or other people!

  1. When did you first consider yourself a writer?

The honest answer is I don’t know.  I’ve been writing since I was about five years old so it’s something I’ve done for most of my life.  I first decided to make a serious go at it a couple of years ago and that’s when I started writing the first book in my Gallows series.

  1. What inspired you to write your book?

With my first published book, ‘Blood Bound’, I basically wrote the book I wanted to read!  I love urban fantasy and I wanted to write something with that same feel to it, though without the urban setting.  I wanted to write a supernatural story with plenty of action, plot twists, interesting characters and witty dialogue.

  1. If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?

I’ve been inspired by so many different books and writers I couldn’t choose just one.  I get a lot of inspiration from movies and TV as well.  I appreciate a great story in any format and I draw inspiration from many different sources.

  1. What book are you reading now?

I’m always reading a few books at once.  At the minute I’m reading ‘White Trash Zombie Apocalypse’ by Diana Rowland, ‘Unicorn Western’ by Johnny Truant & Sean Platt, & ‘Darker Things’ by Rob Cornell.

  1. What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

I like to watch TV shows, go for dinner or drinks, or perhaps least surprisingly read books!

  1. What time of day do you write?

I write whenever I get the time – usually either first thing in the morning or later on at night.  I don’t have a routine that is set in stone but I grab every spare minute that I can get my hands on.

  1. Where do you get your ideas for your books?

My head is crammed full of wild and wacky ideas and generates more every time I see or read something the slightest bit creatively stimulating.  I’ll start thinking ‘what if’ and my mind will go wandering and come up with something totally different to whatever sparked the idea in the first place!

  1. If you couldn’t be an author, what would your ideal career be?

Hmm, probably a Librarian.  I love books, quiet time and I’m fairly well organised.

  1. What is your favorite tv show?

My all time favourite TV show is ‘Weird Science’ – it’s hilarious and insanely creative.  I’m a bit of a couch potato so I have a lot of favourite shows.  More recently I’m into ‘Arrested Development’, ‘Archer’ and ‘Psych’.  I like to laugh!

  1. Can you tell us about your upcoming book?

Hell Halved is the fifth book in the Gallows series and comes out in July.  For those following the series here are a few things you can expect to see in this book: Sarah visits a vampire brothel. Shaun finds out what happened to Roman.  Flicky gets herself into a mess with a demon.

  1. Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?

Write fast, work hard and never give up!  The differences between having a dream and realising it are hard work and determination.

  1. How do you cope with writer’s block?

I don’t let it happen in the first place!  I make sure I have notes   before I start and if I get stalled I look back over the notes.  Sometimes I re-read a bit of what I’ve written and find I have to cut something that doesn’t work and start over.  I never let myself stop writing when I get stalled like this, that way it’s always easy to go back to and I never get mentally blocked.

  1. What was the hardest thing to cut from your manuscript?

I don’t really let editing get to me.  If something needs cut it needs cut.

17. Where can we buy your books or visit your website?

This is my website:

You can buy these books in many, many places, but to save time here are the main ones:

Amazon US:

Amazon UK:

Barnes & Noble US:

Note: The first book in the series ‘Blood Bound’ is free in several of the above places but Amazon have not yet price-matched it.

Book Tour ~ Spotlight and Review for The Price of Vengeance by Author Kurt D. Springs

Price of Vengeance

Price of Vengeance

“Liam! What have you done?” Marcus demanded. “You know our teachings on revenge.”

Suddenly, irrationally angry, Liam straightened. “How can you defend him after what he did? To you, to Mom, to my birth parents, to everyone we cared about?”

With a howl of despair and emotional agony, Liam dashed forward, through the shade of his father, blindly running into the sewers.

What is the Price of Vengeance? One could understand why Liam is angry. Orphaned at the age of two by a group of giant carnivorous insects called the chitin, he was adopted by High Councilor Marcus and his wife, Lidia, and raised with their older son, Randolf, in New Olympia, the last remaining city on the planet Etrusci.

As an adult, Liam becomes a soldier. After being cut off from the city, he finds that there is an alien intelligence behind the chitin. To defeat it, he must discover who he is and how to use his powers. When Liam discovers that a traitor responsible for his birth parents’ deaths has also murdered his beloved foster parents, he might find that the price he has to pay in his quest for vengeance will prove to be an even more unbeatable foe.

Review of Price of Vengeance

Rating: 4 stars

Sci-fi wouldn’t be a genre that I would normally read, but I’m glad I read Price of Vengeance. It was a very well written book, with enough interesting characters, as well as a Bear-lizard who can communicate telepathically, to keep everything interesting.  I loved the dreamscape where Liam meets Jarek and finds out about who he is, and all about his family. The plot was very well written with enough betrayals, twists and turns to keep you turning the pages.

For me the title says it all. What price would you pay for Vengeance? It’s something that can destroy a man’s soul, and it almost destroys Liam’s.

Liam is an orphan, his family slaughtered by the Chitan – (bug like creatures) and he’s taken in by Marcus and his wife, he also inherits a big brother Randolf. We watch as Liam dedicates his life to being a solider never taking part in sociable affairs.

We learn a lot about Liam when the chitan attack and we see him in full throttle.  He can fight, his abilities are amazing and well written especially when he jumps out of time _ (slows time down) the story continues to follow Liam his brother Randlolf and Azure a being of pure evil, who wants Liam on his side. The struggle between right and wrong, and hatred and love is saturated in this story, and love is stronger no matter what, that it can cause a person to let the hatred and anger go. This is very well shown with Celina’s and Liam’s story.

Overall a very well written book. One I feel all Sci-fi and fantasy/paranormal readers will enjoy.

The only solace is her music class, but even there she can’t seem to keep
it together, sabotaging her grade and her one chance at a meaningful

her future.

My Review:

Finding Home

Star Rating 5 stars

This isn’t the type of book I would normally read, but I was given it for an honest opinion as part of a book tour. I surprisingly found so much meaning and depth in this story.  Amy a damaged young lady, her mother is dead and her father is a rock star and to top it all off Amy has a drink and attitude problem, her father sees no other way out but to ship her off to her aunt Lou’s.

Amy has been home schooled the last three years so starting a new school and in the middle of the term is tough add all the other problems she carries with her and you’ve got a walking time bomb.  I found Amy was like so many other people bottling up problems, blaming everyone for their problems and creating new ones along the way. She did everything that was bad or wrong just to ease the pain of losing her mother, but the road she goes down is so destructive and sad.

The author very bravely tackles so many topics with taste, nothing in the novel is too graphic yet we are faced with drink and drug problems, the loss of a parent and abuse of a sexual nature. I found seeing all this through Amy’s eyes was hard as she was at the receiving end of all of this. Yet while we follow Amy on her sad journey there was one lesson to be learnt you can look at it from her perspective or her fathers, but in my eyes there is three sides to every story, his side, her side and then the truth but the truth hurts and regardless if you’re an adult or a child it’s a tough one to face up too no matter what.

I really enjoyed this story it gives you pause about your own turmoil’s in life and how you really deal or look at them, sometimes we need to take a deep breath and stand back from the circle to see the whole picture.

This is a story about finding yourself and one that was well written with great meaning, I truly enjoyed it.

We also have a giveaway ~ one free e-book of Finding Home.  Just follow this link Best of Luck 🙂

Spotlight for Heart of the Witch – By Judy Goodwin

Zerrick’s fears are closing in on him. A local girl has been accused of witchcraft. There are murmurs of a cursed illness in town. And Zerrick’s father, the town Reverend, has announced that he is leading a vendetta against magic and will burn them at the stake.

The problem is, Zerrick is the witch.

This is the start of what will be a monumental journey for Zerrick, to answer the question that most plagues him. His people, colonists in the land of Argessa, think that magic is evil, yet the native tribes use it as a tool for good. As he travels deep into the land, Zerrick must decide for himself if he is damned or blessed. A woman, an old scout, and a funny little creature will all help him face his worst nightmare, the Ravenger, a demon of unspeakable power.

In the end, he’ll find the heart of magic.

About the land of Argessa:
“At first glance with the witch hunts you might think this is an alternate America, but if you look closer, you’ll find things are different. Outside the town walls are wild jungles. The natives have black curly hair and beards. In fact, I based Argessa on Australia in the Queensland region, so when Zerrick makes his journey, he travels through rainforest and jungle eventually into wild brushlands and finally into desert. The Put-na, the native people, are loosely based on Aborigine, as is their language.”
About the cover:
“I worked with a Brazillian artist, Lucas Pandolfelli, for the cover illustration of the book. He was excited to depict a critical scene near the end, where Zerrick faces the Ravenger, a demon who works for Angist, the god of evil.

From the Author:
Heart of the Witch, an epic fantasy novel:
“I came up with the idea for this book as a way to explore a fantasy setting outside the tired old medieval castle with the knight and the princess. By setting my world in a slightly later time frame–the 1600’s, it gave me a whole new set of problems to work with. Colonialism. The pushing out of native people. Exploration of a new continent. And witch hunts. There could still be magic, there could still be monsters and quests and fair ladies, but I thought this could be a fresh new spin on old tired themes.”
