About the Author:

Inge-Lise Goss was born in Denmark, raised in Utah and graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Utah. She is a Certified Public Accountant and worked in that field for over twenty years. She now lives in the foothills of Red Rock Canyon with her husband and their dog, Bran, where she spends most of her time in her den writing stories dictated by her muse. When she’s not pounding away on the keyboard she can be found reading, rowing, or trying to perfect her golf game.

Novel: The Tegen Cave

Question: What have you published recently?

My first novel, The Tegen Cave, a dark fantasy, was published in 2013 by Silver Tongue Press. In May of this year, The Cost of Crude, a mystery/thriller, was released by the same publisher.

Question: How, and when, did you decide to become a writer?

Dreams. They were so vivid and kept swirling around in my head when I was awake. Then I started getting this nagging feeling I should put them on paper. Initially the task seemed to daunting so I tried to wipe the whole idea out of my mind. But instead, the same story invaded my dreams over and over again. I felt my subconscious was forcing me to try my hand at writing. That’s when I knew I had to give it a shot. I was surprised how easy the words flowed and became convinced a muse was guiding my fingers over the keyboard.

Question: What is a typical day like for you as a writer?

My typical day isn’t all that exciting. I wake up around 6:30 a.m. and force my feet to the floor. After slipping on a pair of yoga pants, t-shirt and shoes, I trudge down the stairs to a rowing machine and drop down into its seat. I push on ear buds, flip on the music, and listen to rock-n-roll while I row to the beat for twenty-five minutes. As I continue enjoying the music, I head out the front door and walk a mile.

Feeling sweaty when I return home, instead of grabbing a bottle of water, I gulp down a cup of coffee. I pour a bowl of cereal and drench it with blue berries. Breezing through the newspaper, I chat with my husband about a few of the articles. Then I fill my coffee mug and move to the den on the second floor.

I turn on my computer and check emails. Satisfied I have responded to everything, well, almost everything that needs my attention, I open the file containing my current project. My daily goal is to be writing by 10 a.m. That’s also the time when my muse is up and ready to get to work. In fact, she pouts when I’m running late or she’s been ignored for a few days.

Around noon, I take a short break for lunch. When I return to the keyboard, the adventure springs back into my head and my fingers punch a way again. At 4:30 p.m. my alarm buzzes signalling me that it’s time to wrap up my writing, but my muse normally keeps me at the computer for at least another fifty minutes. Then I finally hit the save button, lean back in the chair, and close my eyes. I gather my thoughts and put the story to rest for the day.

I quickly shuck my clothing and hurry into the shower. As soon as I step out of the bathroom, cocktails are poured. After dinner, when I don’t have plans for the evening, I curl up on the couch and read or watch TV.

Question: What types of writing do you do?

The first three novels I wrote were from first person viewpoint. As I wrote them, I never knew what was going to happen next. I was always anxious to get back to the story. Hopefully, readers will feel the same way when they read The Tegen Cave. The Cost of Crude, my second published novel is written in third person. It was just as exciting to write as the first person novels. My writing style tends to fluctuate depending on the story. It’s fun to try new things and explore different genres.

Question: What are your favorite characters that you have created? Tell us about them.

I like writing about strong female characters that learn to handle themselves in dangerous and frightening situations. I also like mysterious male characters that have a dark side.

Sara Jones, the protagonist in The Tegen Cave, is an independent, 24-year-old woman who fell in love with a member of a crime family. Realizing the truth about her boyfriend, she leaves him and hopes she has covered her trail well. After she becomes involved with another man, her 25^th birthday approaches and her bodily desires become uncontrollable, desires that he satisfies. When she discovered he’s a member of a bloodthirsty group that uses spiders to incapacitate their prey, she flees. I like this character because she grows both mentally and physically as the story unfolds.

Brett Daborel is a strong, gorgeous-looking man who possesses paranormal abilities. He’s an awesome lover, yet dangerous. Brett can easily attract a woman’s attention and just as easily he can become the target of skilled thugs, but to tangle with him could lead to deadly consequences.

Question: do you find you “mentally edit” other writers’ works as you read them? Does doing this help you or bother you?

Since I started writing, I find I’m doing it all the time. If the novel is in dire need of editing, it trumps the story. Then, I’m spending all my time “mentally editing” it instead of following the storyline. When that happens, I stop reading that novel and move on to another one.

Question: What music do you listen to, while writing?

None. I find it distracts from the story buzzing around in my head wanting to flow on the page. I’m just not good at multi-tasking. Yes, I can exercise, drive or clean house and listen to music at the same time, but that’s about it.

Question: What do you eat while writing?

Nothing. Chewing affects me the same way as listening to music.

Boy it’s a tossup between The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Sleeper and Young Frankenstein.

What TV shows do you like to watch?

Under the Doom, CSI, CSI-Los Angeles, True Blood (unfortunately, that series has ended), Elementary, Person of Interest, The Mentalist and the PBS shows: Poirot, Sherlock Holmes, Mid-Summer Mysteries, and Downton Abby.

What do you like to do for fun or just to relax?

Travel, read, golf, and play board games.
